What is rising damp? Rising damp is ground moisture that travels up through brickwork and mortar by capillary action, usually because the damp proof course (DPC) has failed or been bridged. It typically shows as a tide mark up to 1 metre high, with salts, peeling paint and damp plaster. Treatment usually involves installing a new chemical DPC and re-plastering affected walls.

What causes rising damp?
Most Sussex homes built before the 1940s relied on slate or bitumen damp proof courses that simply wear out. When the DPC fails — or gets bridged by raised ground levels, render, or internal plaster — ground moisture is free to wick up through the masonry like water up a sponge.
Brighton and Hove's older terraces, flint cottages and Victorian villas are especially prone: lime mortars are highly capillary, and decades of repairs often leave the original DPC buried or broken.
