Quick answer

How do you stop damp coming through external walls? Damp through external walls is stopped by repairing the defects letting water in — failed pointing, cracked render, damaged sills and copings — and then protecting porous masonry with a breathable water-repellent cream. This silicone-based treatment makes brickwork shed rain while still allowing the wall to breathe, typically protecting for 20+ years.

Spot the warning signs

Signs of external wall damp in your home

Caught early, external wall damp is far cheaper to fix. If you recognise any of these, it’s worth getting a local expert to take a look — our advice is free.

  • Damp patches after rain — internal damp appearing on external-facing walls in wet weather
  • Crumbling mortar joints — pointing that's cracked, recessed or falling out
  • Cracked or hollow render — blown render trapping water against the wall
  • Green staining & moss — algae marking where walls stay persistently wet
  • Spalling bricks — brick faces flaking off from freeze-thaw damage
  • Damp around openings — water tracking in at window reveals, sills and lintels
Why it happens

What causes external wall damp?

Driving rain off the Channel hits Brighton's exposed elevations hard. Once pointing perishes or render cracks, every storm pushes water deeper into the wall. Solid-wall Victorian properties — most of central Brighton and Hove — have no cavity to stop it, so moisture travels straight through to internal plaster.

Freeze-thaw cycles then make it worse: trapped water expands as it freezes, spalling brick faces and widening cracks. A modest programme of repointing, render repair and breathable weatherproofing stops the cycle and protects the wall for decades.

External Wall Damp FAQs

What is the best way to waterproof external brick walls?
Repair defects first (pointing, render, sills), then apply a breathable silicone water-repellent cream. Avoid non-breathable sealants and waterproof paints — they trap moisture inside the wall and cause worse damage over time.
Does repointing stop damp?
If failed pointing is the entry route, yes — repointing with the correct mortar restores the wall's weather resistance. Older solid walls usually benefit from a breathable water-repellent treatment afterwards for extra protection.
Should I use lime or cement mortar for repointing?
Older Sussex properties built with lime mortar should be repointed in lime — hard cement mortar traps moisture and damages soft bricks. We match the mortar to your wall's construction.
Is masonry cream visible after application?
No — once cured it's completely invisible. The wall looks unchanged but sheds water like a raincoat, which you'll see when rain beads off instead of soaking in.
How much do external wall damp services cost?
It depends on wall area, access and repairs needed — small repointing jobs cost a few hundred pounds, full elevation treatments more. Every quote is free, fixed and broken down clearly.

Stop damp before it spreads — and costs you more.
