Quick answer

How do you stop condensation and black mould? Condensation is stopped by reducing moisture in the air and improving ventilation: extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms, positive input ventilation (PIV) units, better heating balance and treating cold spots. Existing black mould should be professionally cleaned and treated with fungicidal products to stop regrowth.

Spot the warning signs

Signs of condensation and mould in your home

Caught early, condensation and mould is far cheaper to fix. If you recognise any of these, it’s worth getting a local expert to take a look — our advice is free.

  • Black spot mould — clusters of black mould in room corners, behind furniture and around window reveals
  • Streaming windows — heavy condensation on glass and frames every morning
  • Musty smell — stale, damp air — especially in bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Mould on belongings — mildew appearing on clothes, shoes or furniture in cupboards
  • Peeling paint near ceilings — damp patches on cold external walls with no tide mark
  • Worse in winter — the problem appears when heating goes on and windows stay shut
Why it happens

What causes condensation and mould?

Every household creates moisture — cooking, showers, drying laundry — around 10 litres of water vapour per day. When warm moist air hits cold surfaces like external walls and windows, it condenses. Without enough ventilation, that moisture feeds black mould (Aspergillus niger), which can aggravate asthma and allergies.

Modern draught-proofing, double glazing and disused chimneys make Sussex homes more airtight than ever — great for heating bills, terrible for ventilation. That's why condensation is now behind the majority of 'damp' complaints we survey.

Condensation & Mould FAQs

Is black mould dangerous?
Black mould releases spores that can irritate airways and worsen asthma, allergies and respiratory conditions — children and older people are most vulnerable. It should be removed properly and the underlying condensation fixed, not just wiped down.
Why does my house get condensation even though I open windows?
Opening windows helps but is inconsistent and loses heat. Persistent condensation usually means moisture production exceeds ventilation capacity — a correctly sized extractor fan or PIV unit removes moist air continuously without freezing the house.
What is a PIV unit and does it work?
A positive input ventilation (PIV) unit gently pushes fresh, filtered air into the home (usually from the loft), displacing humid stale air through natural leakage points. For whole-house condensation and mould problems, PIV is one of the most effective and affordable fixes available.
Will repainting over mould fix it?
No — mould will grow straight back through standard paint. The mould must be killed and removed, the surface treated, and the condensation source addressed. Then mould-resistant paint can keep walls clean.
How much does condensation treatment cost?
Mould treatment and a quality extractor fan can cost a few hundred pounds; whole-house PIV systems typically cost more depending on the property. We'll give you a free fixed quote after a quick assessment.

Stop damp before it spreads — and costs you more.
