Why is my floor damp? Floor damp usually means ground moisture is rising through a solid floor with a failed or missing damp proof membrane (DPM), or humid air is soaking suspended timber floors via blocked sub-floor ventilation. What causes floor damp?
Solid floors built before the 1960s often have no damp proof membrane at all — just concrete or tiles laid on earth. As ground moisture rises, it evaporates through the floor, soaking coverings and feeding mould. Modern membranes can fail too, especially where floors have been patched or extended.
Suspended timber floors breathe through airbricks in the outside walls. When those get blocked, buried by raised paths or painted over, the sub-floor void becomes a humidity trap that soaks joists and boards from below.
